MUSTANGS EARN THIRD

It is the day after the heartbreaking loss to Edwardsville in the IHSA state tournament and the Mustangs had to regroup and attempt to salvage a third place finish in their first trip to the final four.

The first three innings saw only eleven batters stroll to the plate with two (Kyle Dermody , Ben Raney ) gathering singles but no runs were scored and the opponent ( Watseka Warriors) had scored a run in each of the second and third innings and lead 2-0.

Raney started the fourth inning with his second hit of the day, moved to second on Zach Gruel ground out and to third on Charlie Dennehey’s bouncer back to the pitcher. Andrew Cook grounded up the middle and the shortstop made a low throw to first that was mishandled and allowed Raney to score with Morrison’s first run.

Morrison was retired in order in the fifth inning and had two runners on base in the sixth due to a walk and a Warrior error, but was unable in score. The stage was set for a very action packed seventh inning.

To start the seventh, the Warrior lead off batter was safe on a bunt and moved to second by a sacrifice bunt. The Watseka lead was increased by a sharp single to right field scoring the third run for the Warriors.

Morrison came to the seventh inning needing two runs to stay alive and extend the game another inning. Pitcher Jason Smith earned a walk and was replaced by pinch runner Zach Schaver. Ethan Goodenough’s grounder to short moved Schaver to second and Tyler Hayes immediately sent Schaver home with a hard line drive double to right. Kyle Dermody then stroked a single to right field and scored Hayes with the tying run and the Morrison fans were erupting. Raney and Zach Gruel followed with infield groundouts and the game was headed into the eighth inning tied at three.

Smith allowed the Warrior cleanup batter to single and then immediately picked off the substitute pinch runner to the delight of all Morrison fans. He then retired the next two Warriors on a fly ball to Dermody in left and a ground ball to Goodenough to end the top of the eighth inning.

The Morrison eighth inning started with Connor Stanton tapping a ball back to the pitcher who fell in fielding it and threw poorly to first and Stanton was on board. Pinch runner Danny Dennehey took over the running for Stanton and was quickly moved to second as Charlie Dennehey was safe at first when his two strike bunt as fielded and dropped upon him being tagged and the winning run was 180 feet from home. Dennehey was sent home by the game winning single of Andrew Cook and the third place hardware belonged to the Mustangs

The Mustangs ended their record season with a record of 29 wins and three losses.
